URBAN LEGEND

Year: 1998
Actors: Jared Leto, Alicia Witt, Rebecca Gayheart, Michael Rosenbaum, Robert Englund
Director: Jamie Blanks
Running Time: 99min

Plot:
Everybody's heard of them, yet they have no traceable source. They're Urban Legends, contemporary tall-tales that emerge from the underground and take on colourful lives of their own.

When a series of strange deaths occur on the campus of Pendleton College, student Natalie (Alicia Witt) begins to suspect that there is a bizarre link, someone is making urban legends a sinister reality. Her classmates, loyal Brenda (Rebecca Gayheart), ambitious journalist major Paul (Jared Leto) and class joker Damon (Joshua Jackson) insist the deaths are just coincidences despite the extraordinary circumstances.

But when Natalie gets too close to discovering the killer's demented desire to re-create the ultimate urban legend, she realises that she could be the next victim

Review:
This movie was a very inventive stylish Slasher with an all star cast, each actor gave something to their roles which made the movie very watchable and enjoyable, I think the best performance was by Brad Dourif (Voice of chucky) even though he was only in the movie for the first 6 minutes gaining only about 2 minutes of screen time his character was simply perfect for his role.

The Killers wears a big winter coat so its thick and the hood covers the face so you really can’t tell who it could be because you can’t see their body physique or even the shape of their face which gave a very creepy vibe and adds the element of guessing who it could be to the movie, when I finally found out who the killer was I was surprised but very happy it wasn’t the typical person who I had in mind it kind of made the movie unique in some ways.

The main character in the movie was Alicia Witt she plays the role of Natalie Simon a college student, she played her character role really well and looked stunning, she knew there was a killer out there killing off all her friends and she was the main focus for this, she tried to warn everyone but no one would listen, that made me want to shout at the TV screen because I was really getting into the movie.

The only character I didn’t really like or see much point in was Jared Leto’s character Paul Gardener, he plays the role of a school newspaper Journalist, he is one of the main characters but didn’t really do much to be honest and didn’t show much character.

The movie is full of good humour and some genuine scares which was enough to keep me entertained throughout the whole movie, and when some of the characters started to be killed off I felt a little sad because I liked the personality of their character roles.

The death scenes left a lot to the imagination, for some reason when anyone was about to die the camera would shy away from it so you didn’t really see any real death scenes and nobody even tried to fight back they just let the killer kill them which seemed very fake, sometimes you wouldn’t even see or know about the death until all of a sudden their body appears out of nowhere which I think as just to keep the body count up, it really wasn’t as good as most slasher movies in the death scene department, although I did really enjoy the style of kills the fact they kept each death true to an urban legend.

There wasn’t really many special effects or gore in the movie, The most gore you see in the movie is a small puddle of blood on the floor when the college rent a cop Reese Wilson (Loretta Devine) slips over in it, of course you see a few dead body’s throughout the movie and in the final few scenes of the movie but it just wasn’t enough to keep me satisfied.

Scores:

Acting and characterisation 7/10
Gore and death scenes 4.5/10
Overall enjoyment factor 6.5/10
I wish the story had more consistency and I wanted to see more of Natalie Simon’s college friends.
